A Dutch Company Won Bid to Supply Heifers to Ethiopia

Van der Ploeg International BV, a Dutch company, has won a tender floated by the Ethiopian Agriculture Growth Project (AGP) to supply pregnant heifers to Ethiopia. The bid was opened on September 23, 2013, invited local and international bidders for the supply of bovine semen, bull, doses of hormone, Holsteins and parent poultry.

The bid attracted the interest of nine local and international bidders, however, only five bidders made an offer, including Van der Ploeg International BV.

The final result of the bid was announced five months later, even thought the bid was opened in September 2012,owing to a rigorous bid  evaluation process, Keberu Belayneh, coordinator of the Ethiopian Agricultural Growth Project told Fortune.

Wise Team Plc, an Ethiopian company, was awarded the tender to supply parent poultry, offered 142,419 dollars for the supply of 15,000 parent poultry in association with a foreign company. Two other Ethiopian companies, Addis Vet Veterinary Drugs & Medical Importer and Addis Livestock Production & Productivity Improvement Service offered 130,000 dollars and 890,000 Br, respectively, for the supply of 37,000 doses of hormone and 5,000 doses of semen. However, the two lots were canceled, as a result of failing to submit required documents and bid security requirements by the bidders, said Keberu.

Crv BV, another Netherlands-based company, which participated in the bid for the supply of semen, offered 25,654 dollars, but failed to win the bid. The last lot of the bid, for the supply of 20 bulls, did not attract any bidders.

Because of the unavailability of the input in those lots of the bid, the project will announce another round of tender soon, said Keberu.
