Ethiopia Releases Current Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey Report

The Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia released the Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey Report for the 2010-11 year. All rural and urban areas were covered by the survey excluding three zones in afar and six zones in Somali.

The survey was broken down in to three major categories consisting of caloric consumption, expenditure levels and sources, and socio-economic indicators noted the agency.

The survey showed that urban areas have an average of 3.5 people in each household while the average number of people in a household in rural areas is 5.1 people in 2010/11 according to the Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey.

The average number of people living in a household nationally is 4.8 with females heading 25 per cent of all households on a national level.

The survey was also able to show that male make up 61% of the workforce in rural areas and 52% in urban areas. Literacy rates showed an increase for both males and females in urban and rural areas which was noted as a significant and notable change in the last few years.

The survey showed that in the previous year 48.3% of children aged 10 and older are literate in comparison to the national rate of 37.6% in 2004-05.

The household consumption and expenditure survey is performed every five years. The last surveys were undertaken in 199506, 1999-00 and 2004-5.This survey is administered by the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia.
