New Biofertilizer Technology to Improve Productivity

A new soyabean bio fertilizer technology introduced to farmers in Jimma improved productivity according to the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Institute.

Utilizing the new soybean bio fertilizer will not only improve productivity but it will also decrease fertilizer costs said Dr. Solomon Assefa, Director General of the Institute.

The agricultural institute is committed to the expansion of the technology across the country in partnership with different stakeholders he noted.

The deterioration of soil quality which is currently affecting productivity is primarily due to tradition farming practices leading to the institute concentrating its efforts on various problem solving efforts noted Dr. Tolosa Debela, Director of Soil and Water Research with the EARI.

The high quality soya bean bio fertilizer is the product of these efforts and it is expected that it will contribute to improving the quality of the soil and enhancing the productivity of local farmers he added.

Appropriate implementation of the technology is expected to allow farmers to raise their productivity by anything from 24 to 57 percent according to the research conducted by the Institute.

The expansion of this technology will have a significant role in enhancing national productivity said Dr. Tolsa.
