Ethiopia to Promote Coffee Varieties

Ethiopia is to further promote the different varieties of coffee on the world market according to the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office.

Trademark registrations for Ethiopian fine coffee brands such as Sidama, Harar, Yirgacheffe have received recognition from an estimated 40 countries and 113 companies according to Berhanu Adelo, Director General of the EPO at a forum organized under the theme of 'Ethiopian Fine Coffee Trade Marking and Licensing Initiatives'.

Activities to increase the recognition of Ethiopian coffee varieties on the international market are underway in collaboration with Arnold and Porter and other institutions according to Berhanu.

The activities that are being launched aim to promote the 6000 Ethiopian coffee varieties with different flavors he said.

The Ethiopian government has taken steps to fill gaps which have become a challenge to promotional activities added Berhanu.

A committee made up of stakeholders has been set up in the last six months to further strengthen promotional activities in relation to coffee varieties.

Arnold and Porter is committed to support Ethiopia in efforts to promote coffee varieties on the global market said Robert Winter, CEO of the Washington based law firm.

Collaborative efforts between the government and other stakeholders will be significant in allowing Ethiopia to appropriately benefit from the different types of coffee he added.
