ERCA Extends Tax Deadline for Group C Taxpayers

The Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority extended the tax deadline for Group ‘C’ taxpayers in Addis Ababa by a week to August 14th.

Group ‘C’ businesses are those businesses which have annual sales less than 100 thousand birr and who are not expected to collect Value Added Tax but pay a gross estimated annual tax amount.

Meanwhile the deadline Group A taxpayers who are charged with monthly obligations including the collection of VAT on behalf of the tax authority is November 9th and the deadline for Group B businesses is set to the 10th of September.

ERCA collects taxes from Addis Ababa based businesses on behalf of the city administration.

Ethiopian tax payers are divided into three sub groups with the first group, ‘A’ being those with annual sales of more than 500,000 birr while the second group, ‘B’ consist of businesses that have annual sales turnovers ranging between 500 thousand birr and 100 thousand birr.

It is to be remembered that ERCA collected approximately 71 billion birr in the 2011-12 budget year according to a tentative report released by the authority.

ERCA collected 36.1 million from domestic taxes, 34.5 billion birr from customs and duties and 96.7 million from lotteries noted the report.

The revenue collected by the authority exceeded its performance in the previous financial year by 16 billion birr although it fell short of the 76 billion birr projected for the fiscal year.
