The Parliament of Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia approved a budget of 23.29 billion birr for the 2012-13 financial year. The budget shows an increase of 25% from the budget allocated by the regional government in the last budget year.
The budget tabled by the executive branch of the state government to the legislative body was a new high for the region.
The budget was planned on the basis of expanding development projects in the region said Abdulaziz Mohammed, Vice President of the state.
The Oromia state government has allocated nearly 3.7 billion birr of the budget for various administrative costs while an estimated 3.37 billion goes to capital cost and about 9.5 billion is designated to support towns and zones in the regional state.More than 6 billion birr of the budget is earmarked for the financing projects designed to meet the Millennium Development Goals while 2 billion birr is put in reserve.
The Oromia Parliament held its 4th round 2 year meeting for three days in Adama town to deliberate on the budget and to decide upon tasks to be undertaken by the region for the coming year.
The parliament also discussed various issues to do with land allocation and corruption during its deliberation.
