Ethiopian Vehicle Inspection Servers Increase to 29

The number of companies offering the mandatory vehicle inspection services on contract with the Ethiopian Federal transport Authority has increased to 29 with eight more business entering into agreements with the authority it was said.

The eight new businesses offering the service are Anbessa City Bus, United Auto Maintenance, Yetebaberut Beherawi Petroleum. Lucy Car Sales and Caliper Metal Works Engineering in Addis Ababa and Mekonnen Sayed and Arba Minch Mekane Yesus in the Legetafo and Arba Minch areas.

Some of the new service providers have been able to install the machinery required for inspection purposes while others are in the process of acquiring it said Negussie Kebede, Director of the Vehicle Inspection Certificate Directorate with the authority.

The machinery required for inspection is estimated to cost about 3.16 million birr and is able to perform tests on brakes, chassis sideslip, shock absorbers, emissions and headlight alignment.

In related news the authority extended the deadline for mandatory vehicle inspections to the 8th of September.

The extension was awarded because just 45% of all vehicles operating in the country at this time have received the inspection tag according to the authority.

The delay is due to the lack and awareness and misinformation people have about the newly automated inspection processes as well as some problems at the test centers said Negussie.

The Transport authority expects most of the challenges encountered in the first attempt to implement automated inspections to be resolved next year he added.
