ESA Approves 2000 Quality Standards

The Ethiopian Standards Agency announced that it has approved more than 2000 new and revised quality standards in seven sectors in the completed fiscal year.

An estimated 15,000 of the standards approved are new while the other 500 or so are revisions of existing standards according to Daniel Zenebe, Communication and Public Relations Head for the Agency.

The standards approved by the agency are expected to play a notable role in enhancing the productivity of the domestic industries and support the transfer of technology he noted.

The standards are particularly important in the correct use of the plastic and rubber resources of the country as well as in implementing renewable energy sources and import substitutions to enhance foreign currency earnings explained Daniel.

The ESA is committed to enhancing standards and has trained above 1200 trainees from 100 organizations towards putting its standards into effect.

The agency has currently more than 8000 standards with 119 that are mandatory. Goods and services that require mandatory standards need to be accredited by the relevant quality certifying agency said Daniel.
