Ethiopia Energy Sector Database Launched

The Ethiopian Energy Sector Mapping and Database Project was launched with the completion of the first phase of the study and the web based database system last week. The project is a collaboration of the Energy Co-ordination Office of GIZ-ECO and the Ministry of Water and Energy.

The project required partnership with federal, state and woreda level governmental institutions as well as including a group of eight domestic senior energy consultants headed by PROCEED, a local consulting firm said Wondimu Tekle, State Minister for Water and Energy.

The first phase of the project also involved the collection of energy data from the federal level, primarily on the supply side including biomass renewable energy, electricity and hydrocarbons, initiating energy data collection from selected states and woreda, the collection of data on energy sector actors, entering the data into the database and allowing the processing of the report into tables and maps he said.

The second phase of the project will include national data collection activities, updating the energy aspect of the national biomass inventory, energy consumption survey and further improvements to the database system to enhance operational capacity and develop the energy data management capacity at both the state and federal levels.
