A high level study being conducted by various government institutions to form a new is new corporation in Ethiopia is near completion. The new corporation known as the Ethiopian Trade Enterprise will be a merger of three public enterprises: The Merchandise Wholesale and Import Trade Enterprise, The Procurement Services Enterprise and the Building Materials and Supplies Enterprise.
The study has been in progress for the past six months conducted by a committee made up of officials from various institutions such as the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Ministry of Trade, and the Ministry of Industry.
The committee, chaired by Neway Gebreab, Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister, is in the process of recruiting employees for the new corporation said a non-authorized source.
It is to be remembered that officials from the MoI and MoT proposed the formation of the corporation eight months ago in response to problems encountered in the distribution of basic goods.The corporation was proposed to amalgamate the trading, import, procurement, supply, distribution and manufacturing activities of the three companies to make them more efficient.
The MWITE and the Building Materials and Supplies Enterprise have been asked to present full financial reports, an inventory of human resources and legal and management documents explained the source. The documentation of the MWITE is stalling the committee’s progress according to the source.
If the merger goes through the respective companies will continue to handle the tasks that they handle at the present although their management will come under a centralized entity.
