Ethiopian Company Wins International Award

Dream Light Solid Waste Management plc, Ethiopia received the World Business and Development Award, 2012 announced a joint press release by the United Nations Development Program and the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.

The 2012 World Business Development Award was given to eleven companies from Brazil, China, Ghana, Denmark, India, Kenya, the United Kingdom and the United States in the categories of small and medium sized enterprises and large organizations.

The winning companies were recognized at a ceremony held to conclude the Business Action for Sustainable Development Business Day that took place as part of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development- Rio+20.

The Awards were given as an acknowledgment of innovative business models that earn commercial success as well as improving the social, environmental and economic situations faced by communities.

The Awards for this year attracted 115 applications from 38 countries representing a range of inclusive business efforts managed by private companies, associations and non governmental organizations.

Located in Bahir Dar, capital of the Amhara regional state Dream Light is a public-private initiative supported by the Local Economic Development Program. The company is engaged in the collection and recycling of solid waste and producing bio-fuel, smokeless briquettes and compost for use in the local community.  

The company currently employs more than 300 young people and women who are primarily from vulnerable sections of society.
