Ethiopian Quality Awards Honor Nine Organizations

The Ethiopian Quality Awards honored nine organizations with awards for quality in a ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in the presence of Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hailemariam Desalegn.

The excellence awards were given to Biruh Tesfa Irrigation and Water Technology, Bishoftu Hospital, Dashen Brewery, Harar Brewery, Kality Metal Factory and Kombolcha Textile SC, while Betel Teaching Hospital and Mekelle University and Kombolcha Steel Products Industry were the recipients of merit awards.

Manufacturers and service providers need to work to enhance quality to become competitive on the global market said Hailemariam at the ceremony.

Ethiopia can boost its role in the global arena and attain growth if products are of the desired quality he noted.

Participation and appreciation certificates were given to other organizations who took part in the competition.

150 organizations took application forms to attend the competition but just 52 actually took in the first round with 36 organizations passing on to the second round which consisted of assessment and field visits made by representatives of the technical committee.

Companies that took part in the competition included manufacturers and both for profit and non-profit service providers as well as those engaged in the construction sector.

A total of 20 manufacturers, six construction companies, 12 profit service providers and 14 non-profit service providers took part in the final account according to the Managing Director Michael Melaku.

The Ethiopian Quality Award was established in 2008 by a collaboration between Walta Information Center and Addis Ababa University the first awards were given out the next year.
