Ethiopian Airport Receives ICAO Certificate

Ethiopia’s Airport Enterprise received the International Civil Aviation Organization certification for Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, making it one of a handful of airports in Africa who have the certificate.

A UN agency based in Canada, ICAO establishes the principles and techniques for international air navigation and promotes the planning and development to ensure the safety and orderly growth of international air transport.

The Airport’s Enterprise trained its personnel and obtain new technology to meet the Agency’s criteria for certification explained an official.

Amongst the efforts taken to meet the standards of ICAO the EAE purchased and installed a runway swipe machine, a magnetic machine to clear metal debris from the runway, at a cost of 7 million birr.

EAE also installed a computer based training software package to be installed on eight computers at Bole International Airport. The software will automatically notify security employees of security threats it identifies within three seconds.

The enterprise qualified 7 employees to identify security threats using the various scanners at the airport including the explosive detecting system and the walk through scanners.
