The Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC) has introduced a new policy to expedite the release of imported goods for the manufacturing sector. Under the directive, importers can now secure waivers for cargo clearance by presenting the original invoice, reducing delays in the process.

Previously, manufacturers faced lengthy verification procedures to confirm the pricing of imported products, leading to production disruptions. The updated directive, signed by Commissioner Debele Kabeta on January 22, responds to industry concerns over cargo clearance delays and aims to improve efficiency.

The policy replaces a six-year-old order, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting manufacturing by ensuring faster access to essential materials. While the initial clearance process will be streamlined, any outstanding dues will be resolved through post-clearance audits.

“This adjustment is crucial for speeding up the importation of commodities necessary for our manufacturing industries,” said Commissioner Debele, emphasizing the policy’s role in boosting economic growth.
