Ethiopia Gears Up for Domestic Safari Car Production

Safari Cars

Bishoftu Automotive Manufacturing Industry (BAMI) has launched a pilot project to produce safari cars, aiming to meet the growing demand for locally-made touring vehicles in the expanding tourism sector.

Previously, inadequate tourism infrastructure hampered tourist arrivals. The government is taking inspiration from Kenya's expertise in safari car manufacturing and assembly, with plans to adapt existing vehicles for local use.

BAMI is not alone in this endeavor. Several other manufacturing enterprises are participating in the pilot project, with the best designs targeted for mass production. The government is actively promoting locally-made vehicles through tax breaks, prioritizing domestic products. Public institutions are encouraged to purchase locally-made vehicles, and the public is urged to support domestic manufacturers.

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh pledged government support to BAMI to help it overcome challenges related to foreign exchange.
