Safaricom Ethiopia announced a hefty investment of USD 1.5 billion to build 5,000 new telecom towers across the country over the next three years. This ambitious plan aims to significantly improve network infrastructure and connectivity for millions of Ethiopians.

"We are excited to expand our network footprint and enhance connectivity," said Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia. "This significant investment underscores our commitment to bridging the digital divide and propelling economic growth in Ethiopia."

Currently, Safaricom Ethiopia operates 2,500 towers, with a mix of self-built structures and those leased from the national operator, ethio telecom. Vanhelleputte expressed gratitude for the Ethiopian government's support and applauded the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) for its swift adaptation to the evolving telecom landscape.

He specifically highlighted the ECA's recent reduction of the Mobile Termination Rate (MTR), a move that facilitates lower calling rates for customers. "This action underlines the Authority's dedication to fostering market efficiency and protecting consumer rights," Vanhelleputte said. "We look forward to continued collaboration with the ECA as we build a stronger network and enhance services."

Safaricom Ethiopia's network expansion aims to not only increase coverage and capacity but also provide access to advanced mobile and digital financial services. This will ultimately benefit both individuals and businesses by bolstering overall connectivity in the country.
