The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei on Friday to achieving universal electricity access. This agreement, signed during the Ethiopia Green Energy Summit 2024, aims to provide electricity to people living in remote areas currently not connected to the national grid.

"This MoU reflects our national electrification plan to reach everyone by 2030," stated Shiferaw Telila, CEO of EEU. The collaboration will prioritize utilizing solar power to illuminate off-grid zones.

The partnership extends beyond just generation. Shiferaw emphasized plans to "expedite electricity digitization, establish and manage data centers, and bolster electric vehicle charging infrastructure" across Ethiopia.

Liu Jifan, CEO of Huawei Ethiopia, expressed enthusiasm for the agreement, highlighting its potential to strengthen cooperation and advance green technology solutions in the country. "Our goal is to equip Ethiopia with off-grid technology and contribute to their sustainable energy agenda," affirmed Liu.

Ethiopia is heavily reliant on hydropower (around 90%). It boasts immense potential for renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and geothermal, with official estimates suggesting a capacity to generate over 60,000 megawatts of electricity.
