Yo Holding, an Ethiopian company, announced that it had established the first coal washing plant in the country, eliminating the need for costly imports.

Situated in the Benishangul Gumuz region, the plant has the capacity to process 1 million tons of washed coal annually, which is utilized by cement, iron, paper, ceramic, and gypsum factories. Yo Holding's ambitious plans involve increasing production to reach 2.16 million tons per year, potentially positioning Ethiopia as the fifth largest coal supplier in Africa.

The company was established in 2019 with a capital of Birr 500 million. This pioneering venture has already generated 200 employment opportunities and is expected to create more in the future. Yo Holding is also actively collaborating with international companies to facilitate the transfer of technology and knowledge to Ethiopia.

Notably, the coal washing plant has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind. It incorporates environmentally friendly technologies that have minimal negative impact. Furthermore, Yo Holding has plans toundertake the redevelopment of coal mining sites and their surrounding areas.
