The Ethiopian Industrial Inputs Development Enterprise (EIIDE), which was established four years ago, said the low performance of the manufacturing sector was attributable to its inefficient capacity. The manufacturing sector shows low performance mainly because of shortage of inputs supply.
According to the Enterprise’s Board Chairman and Trade Minister, Melaku Alebel, the low export performance of the manufacturing sector is attributable to EIIDE’s inefficient capacity of supplying industrial inputs. Ato Melaku said the government is planning to capacitate the enterprise with a view to improving the performance of industries. Bogale Feleke, State Minister of Industry, also said it was time to exploit the country’s domestic capacity and transform EIIDE.
However, the chairman noted that the activities EIIDE undertook in textile and leather area were promising. He said, “We established EIIDE whose job is to supply inputs to textile, leather and leather products and metal manufacturing sectors both by producing them and by procuring from local and international markets. In this regard, the enterprise has brought good achievement especially in textile and leather products.”
The Enterprise’s CEO, Wondale Habtamu, stated, “The major challenges against the manufacturing industry are quality, quantity, and supply chain of inputs. The enterprise is working to address the possible shortcomings by purchasing inputs from local market or importing from abroad on competitive price.”
The government established the Ethiopian Industrial Input Development Enterprise in 2015 with regulation no. 328/2014.
