Ethiopia: Ship Docks at Massawa Port after Two Decades

Mekelle, an Ethiopian Cargo Ship, docked at the port of Massawa, Eritrea, after two decades. The ship will carry 11,000 tons of Eritrean zinc exports to China with a freight of of USD 618,825.

Eritrea also stated that it was planning to enhance its roads which lead to Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrea’s President Isaias Afeworki travelled the entire 70-km (40-mile) road that connects Assab’s port across the Red Sea to the town of Bure just across the border in Ethiopia, which had not been used since the Ethio-Eritrean war broke out in 1998. According to Eritrea’s state-run EriTv, “They were able to confirm that the existing road link was in good state.” EriTv added that “There are (now) plans to modernize the port in Assab and enlarge the road linking it to Bure to four lanes (from one).”

The two year war between the two countries also forced Ethiopia to turn to Djibouti for sea access.
