Ethiopia: EEP Constructing Power Transmission Lines and Power Distribution Stations

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) is constructing high power transmission lines and power distribution stations that will take the power generated from the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GRDE) to the national grid.

The transmission lines and power distribution stations are being constructed at an outlay of 28 billion Birr.

When the GRDE starts generating power it is said to need 500 kilovolt high power transmission lines and distribution station that stretch for more than 1,400 kilometers.

Misikir Negash, EEP’s External & Public Relations Director, explained the power would be supplied to Dedesa and Holeta distribution stations.

At the moment, high power transmission lines and distribution stations at Gibe III, Hurso, Gambella and Mehoni are ready to start operation.

Currently Ethiopia generates 4,234 megawatts electric power from 13 hydroelectric power sources, 6 diesel, 1 geothermal and several wind farms.
