Bureau Terminated Contracts with 116 SMEs

Addis Ababa Construction Bureau (AACB) terminated contracts it concluded with 116 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) – who are all contractors - claiming they have not breached their contracts.

According to Yonas Ayalew, head of AACB, the breach of contract was mostly related to performance problems related to quality and time management.

The contractors’ grade range from 6 to 9. However, according to Yonas, they have drawbacks in time management and money utilization.

As it stands the Bureau is reviewing 10 appeals made by the contractors upon which the decision was made. If the contractors present good enough reason to show their claims, they will be able to continue their jobs after serving a 6 month injunction period. During the 6 months period they will have building training that will help them manage their job better.

“Termination of contract does not mean revocation,” said Yonas. “It is just giving them time to recover from their drawbacks by providing them capacity-building training.”
