Ethiopia Earned 866 Million USD from Coffee Export

The just ended fiscal year saw Ethiopia’s export earnings from coffee reaching 866 million USD. This was from 221,000 tons of coffee exported during the period.

When compared to the 2015/2016 fiscal year the volume of coffee exported increased by 11.5 percent while the earning shows 20 percent increase. The increase in earnings is said to have been influenced by the global coffee price hikes.

The achievement is 92 percent of what Ethiopian Coffee & Tea Development and Marketing Authority targeted. "It is a very great achievement compared to nation's previous years' coffee export performance", the authority noted.

According to Market Development and Promotion Directorate Director at the Authority, Dassa Daniso, previously Ethiopian Coffee was exported to more than 60 countries. However, in the just concluded fiscal year 57 countries imported coffee from Ethiopia, he added. Out of this 86 percent was exported to Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan, USA, Belgium, Sudan and South Korea. Dassa explained.

Out of the entire coffee export Germany alone took 18 percent, he added.
