Ethiopia: Addis Ababa Introduced Coupon Retailing Method

Ethiopia’s capital introduced coupon retailing method which will be used at the Ethiopian Consumers Association shops. The system is being introduced by the Addis Ababa City Administration in the aim of ensuring fair distribution of basic goods for the city’s dwellers.

According to Walta Information Center, shops owned by businessmen in Addis Ababa have raised the prices of goods after the government made an adjustment on public servants’ salaries.

By introducing the coupon transaction the government is aiming at ensuring subsidized consumer goods will reach the residents without being channeled to private businesses.

Commenting on the development Addis Ababa City Administration Spokesperson, Tilahun Gbere-egzabir, noted the coupons would be distributed to residents of the city and they would in return be able to buy goods from Association shops for a reasonable price.

The coupon method would possible avoid the transfer of goods from the shops to private businesses, he added.
