Ethiopia Ready to Distribute 817,000 Metric Tons Fertilizer

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resource Development disclosed it has imported 817,000 metric tons of fertilizer. The imported fertilizers are aimed to be distributed to farmers during the coming rainy season.

According to the Ministry’s Public Relation Office head, Alemayehu Birhanu, in addition to buying the fertilizer the Ministry has given trainings to farmers, extension workers and experts in the aim of having a better harvest.

“We have given due emphasis for this farming season as it is an opportunity to fill the gap created by the recent drought. Cognizant of this, we have made wide ranging preparations both at federal and regional level,” the head explained.

In addition to distributing fertilizers to farmers, the Ministry was under preparation to distribute selected seeds, he furthered.

According to Walta Information Center, even if agriculture production has been showing significant growth in the last couple of decades the late drought has left a gap in the food supply. Hopes are harvest from the coming rainy season will fill the gap.
