Ethiopia: 14 Plastic Factories Producing Below Standard Bags

Study conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change showed around 14 plastic bag factories in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, are producing below standard bags. The study added 2 of these factories operated without a license.

As per Solid Waste Management Proclamation No. 513/2007, the governing legal regime on solid waste management, plastic bags should be thicker than 0.03 millimeter.

Mehari Wondemagegn, Compliance Monitoring and Controlling Director at the Ministry, said out of the 486 factories in Addis Ababa the study was conducted on 21.

He also noted the 14 factories have been producing 8,000 to 10,000 tons of plastic per year.

Commenting on the matter, Shiferaw Teklemaraim, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said the Ministry was determined to take legal measures on the factories.
