Ethiopian Public Offices to Establish Diaspora Units

Ethiopian federal offices are ready to establish special offices catering to investment and related requests from the Ethiopian Diaspora.

The new units will endeavour to reduce bureaucratic red tape as a precursor to complete Diaspora policy that will come into effect by December.

“The units will exclusively serve you; an inefficient bureaucracy was the major problem we were told of in various Diaspora forums,” said Hailemariam Desalegn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in a speech to representatives of the Ethiopian Diaspora in New York City.

The new units are expected to be fully functional soon and will aim to address complaints received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Hailemariam.

The effort is an expansion of existing efforts that have placed special units committed to serving the Diaspora in many service providers and the procedural structure has been put into place to situate similar units in all major public offices, he explained.

Hailemariam also mentioned that the new policy document would aim to assure benefits and incentives for returning members of the Ethiopian Diaspora.
