Ethiopia: Associations to Import 500 New Buses for Public Transport

Different transport service Associations are to import 500 hundred buses to ease the high demand of public transport, Ethiopian Herald reported.

At the press conference held on May 14, 2015, Kassahun Haile-Mariam, Director General of the Federal Transport Authority (FTA) said the service of the new buses will not jeopardize the service of the existing taxis and the conditions of taxi drivers and their assistance.

Kassahun also said Ethiopian government will allow associations to import buses tax free and avail parking areas.

15 Taxi Owners’ Associations and three Higher Bus Owners’ Associations and Alliance Transport Service participate in the importing of 500 buses.

Yabibal Addis, Head of the Addis Ababa Roads and Transport Bureau said there are only 800 city buses and 8,000 taxis in service for 2.3 million travelers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia daily.
