Kessem Sugar Development Factory is to launch production of sugar with a start-up crushing capacity of 3,500 tons of sugarcane a day, Addis Fortune reported.

The factory is situated in the Afar Regional State, Ethiopia.
Kessem Sugar Development Factory was originally part of the expansion project of Metehara Sugar Factory.

onetheless, a decision was passed for it to become an independent project after the establishment of the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation.

When the factory starts production it will produce 153,000 tons of sugar and 12,500 cubic meters of ethanol per annum.

China National Complete Plant Import & Export Corporation (COMPLANT), a Chinese state owned construction company, has undertaken the construction of the Factory following Metal and Engineering Corporation’s (METEC) failure to deliver the work, said Zemedkun Tekle, Corporate Communications Director of the Sugar Corporation.

Currently, Sugar Corporation owns Wenji-Shoa, Finchaa and Metehara sugar factories. Currently, there are no privately owned sugar factories in Ethiopia.
