Ethiopia: Fentalle to Benefit from Hydroelectric Power Technology

Preparation to install the 1st ULH-MHP (Ultra-Low Head Micro Hydroelectric Power Technology) at Fentalle irrigation scheme is completed. It was done by a project that targeted at enhancing local electric power capacity using small hydro power plant.

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Energy and Climate Change branch Director, Dr. pradeep Monga, said at the handing ceremony, the project is part of UNIDO initiative at regional and global level and is meant to boost access to renewable energy.

“The application of the technology promotes agro-industrial development and creates value chain with other sectors” he said.

He furthered rural electrification is one of the targets of UNIDO, hence the project assists Ethiopian rural electrification endeavor.

UNIDO Regional Director, Jean B. Bakole, said the project enhances agro-industrial productivity and expand business besides assisting the rural community for domestic purposes.

Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Technical Cooperation Division Director Yuzo Goto said the project is targeting at supporting developing countries reduce carbon emission via the adoption of Japan Low Carbon Technology.

The project obtained the fund from the Government of Japan (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry METI) and executed via the UNIDO.
