Ethiopia: City Administration Temporarily Halts receiving Land Requests for Manufacturing

Addis Ababa City Administration’s Land Development and Management Bureau had has temporarily halted receiving manufacturing industries’ land requests, according to Addis Fortune.

During the previous two years, the City Administration had received 900 land requests from manufacturers and only handed 60 of them. However, cCurrently the administration it had been is compelled to stop suspend land approval as of Feburary 23, 2015 to and amend the proposals process and land allocation directives as a result of certain trends in land requests. beginning from February 23, 2015.

Markos Alemayehu, Communications officer for the City’s housing Housing Development and Urban Renewal Agency, said requests for plastic recycling manufacturing had pushed us to scrutinize the economic value of the business in general and as well as the means weto prioritize and balance it with other sectors.

Starting from October 2014, the City Administration had decided to reduce its dependence on the land allocation system and announced an auction for 60 new plots of land reserved for industrial use. It had transferred 1,402ha of the 3,000ha made accessible availed for auctions, in 2013/14.

The City Administration in 2013 issued a directive that guides the land distribution system in two ways, auctioning and allocation. Nevertheless, previously the city used to allocate plots of lands via negotiations, drawing of lots and rewards. This directive permits land allocation to manufacturing industries, spiritual institutions, non-governmental organizations, governmental institutions and for projects that have particular importance for the nation.
