Ethiopia Plans to Build Expressways

Ethiopia intends to build expressways across the country in areas that are regarded as major congested areas. According to Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA), this is going to be done in the aim of solving the traffic overcrowding.

This was disclosed by ERA during the experience sharing workshop on Express Development and Management held in Addis Ababa between ERA itself and its Chinese counterpart.

During the occasion, acting Director General of ERA, Sisay Bekele, said the government has been undertaking various activities to extend expressways to different parts of the country.

He furthered the Authority has conducted road network master plan study in order to meet the increasing demand of transportation by constructing expressways to different parts of the world.

The plan by ERA is to construct expressways in Awash-Mille, Addis Ababa-Debre Birhan, Addis Ababa-Fitche, Addis Ababa – Ambo, Sendefa – Gelan – Sebeta – Menagesha – Sululta - Sendafa (Addis Ababa External Ring Road).

In addition to this there will be constructions of chains of expressways across Ethiopia over the decade.

The workshop would help to improve standards and guidelines by using Chinese experience, Sisay commented on the event.

Deputy Director of Transport Planning and Research Institute with the Chinese Ministry of Transport, Guan Changyu, on his part said expressways are important in order to overcome transportation challenges.
