Ethiopia: New Strategy to Boost Cement Consumption by Threefold

A draft Cement Industry Development Strategy has been released by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry in the aim of increasing the nation’s cement consumption by more than threefold within a decade.

The draft strategy is prepared by Adama Science and Technology University and it has been discussed by stakeholders.

Commenting on the development State Minister Dr. Mebrhatu Meles said the draft document will enhance Ethiopia’s aim to fully attain its cement demand. He furthered the strategy will contribute to the improvement of the cement industry and the capacity of the manufacturers as the production of quality cement with low cost.

The Strategy team leader, Dr Gemechu Waktola on his part noted the aim of the strategy is to boost the nation’s cement consumption from 6 Million Tons to 20 Million Tons.

The draft also includes a plan to provide support for cement manufacturers that produce cement and overcome the shortage in the domestic market.

However, the strategy is expected to cost around 600 Million Birr in order for it to be realized.

For its cements factories, Ethiopia has the option of using its coal deposit and other alternative thermal energy sources such as biomass and municipal solid waste.
