Ethiopia: 200,000 Condominiums to Be Built This Year

Ministry of Urban Development and Construction (MUDC) is aiming to build more than 200,000 condominiums during the current fiscal year across the entire nation.

Mekuria Haile, Minister for MUDC, explained different endeavors are taking place in order to takle the huge housing problems being witnessed in municipals across the country.

Explaining to Urban Development and Construction Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, the Minister said his office is working to make citizens owners of their homes by building houses through cooperatives and various forms of savings schemes.

For the purpose of achieving this goal, he noted, 20,000 condominiums are being built under the 10/90 saving scheme while 50,000 houses are being built under the 20/80 saving scheme.

Problems with provision of land, shortage of construction equipment and problems of infrastructure are obstacles the Ministry has been facing, Mekuria furthered.

Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Gebreegziabher Araya, on his part noted there are encouraging activities taking place for the purpose of housing problem in towns.

In addition to these activities, condominiums under the 40/60 saving scheme and houses being built through cooperatives are progressing according to plan.

On the other hand, the Chairperson noted, the endeavors of the Ministry will help the Ethiopia meet the goal as part of the Growth and Transformation Plan to alleviate shortage of living houses.
