Ethiopia: Planned Abattoir to Be Relocated Once Again

The plan to build an abattoir facility in the Hanna Mariam area has been abandoned by the Addis Ababa Abattoirs Enterprise (AAAE) and the construction is going to move two kilometers away from the original location.

The decision came, according to planning officer of AAAE, Degamlak Dender, because the plot selected 18 years ago is mountainous, costy and will not entertain full modern service.

The Hanna Mariam facility was going to lie on a total of 17,000 square meters. Nonetheless, the newly planned facility is going to be constructed on 34,000 square meters.

A study for the new slaughter house is being carried out by a group from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

“The study group also suggested that the planned abattoir is below international standard and we are forced to choose another place,” Degamlak explained.

The Planning Officer explained the new abattoir is estimated to cost something between U>.S. $ 60 Million to U.S. $ 70 Million. With regard to this, France promised to provide U.S. $ v40 Million as technical assistance.

He furthered, the Enterprise looked Ireland as an example for the two nation’s resemblance in the Abattoir’s location proximity to major airport.

According to Capital, AAAE plans to introduce export slaughter service and also accommodate environmental mitigation. The export service will be conducted by means of an automatic line which can handle bulls, sheep, and goats.

In addition to this the Enterprise intends to host a biogas plant and water treatment plant that will enable the treatment and reuse of water. Other than these, it will also have a research center for higher educational institutions.
