Ethiopia: MeTEC Built Two Trial Locomotives

Ethiopian Metals and Engineering Corporation (MeTEC) disclosed it has built two locomotives for trial purpose.

Major Tsegaye Gebrekirstos, General Manager of Locomotive Sub-Industry, noted the Industry’s major aim is building light as well as heavy carriages and locomotives that will serve in transporting cargos and passengers within cities and inter cities.

The Major added the sub industry is striving hard to fulfill its responsibility to the Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC); by being a domestic supplier and engineering and technical consultant to the Corporation.

When building the trial locomotives, big private industries as well as small and micro enterprises took part, Tsegaye noted. He furthered, out of the 1,000 carriages that are going to be built by a Chinese company for ERC, 530 of them will be built by the industry he runs.

According to the Industry’s General Manager, a Hungarian company was selected to be a model and brought seven of its professionals to Ethiopia to train 20 Ethiopians.

Building the carriages are expected to be finished by the sub industry within eight months from September.
