Ethiopia: 248 Transformers Installed to Curb Power Cuts

Ethiopian Electric Service installed 248 transformers in the capital city and regional states for the purpose of controlling the power cut problems.

Out of the total 248 transformers, 170 of them are installed by China Hydro, a Chinese power company hired by Ethiopian Electric Services.

The newly installed transformers are said to supplement the existing transformers, which are not coping up with the ever growing power load.

Alemayehu Tegenu, Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, noted there is no shortage of electric power and the cause for the power cuts is related to the old power distribution lines. He explained the power distribution line as well as the electric transformers are over- loaded.

The Minister also commented the power consumption of the country is changing. He noted, “The aging distribution system is unable to handle the ever-increasing power demand”.

Alemayehu furthered, old transmission lines are being replaced with new ones and new substations are being installed. “We have built new substations in Sebeta, Sululta and Akakai towns,” he added.
