Ethiopia Earns $172.5 Million from Manufacturing Sector

Ethiopia has earned 172.5 million US dollars in revenue from the manufacturing sector in the last 8 months according to the Ministry of Industry.

The revenue was generated from the garment, leather and leather products, textile, chemical and pharmaceutical and agro processing sub sectors said Melaku Taye, Corporate Communication Director for the Ministry.

The money earned was 54.2 million US dollars more than the same period last year although it is just 60% of the target set by the ministry said Melaku.

The target was not achieved because of various challenges including management problems, shortage of raw materials, inefficient skilled manpower and issues associated with marketing he said.

Ethiopian manufactured goods are exported to Djibouti. China, Germany, Italy, India, France, Turkey, Kenya, North and Southern Sudan as well as the United States noted Melaku.

The Ministry is planning to undertake efforts to improve the quality of exports according to Melaku.

Efforts are also being made to follow up and supervise activities to develop new and in place investment projects to keep to schedules.

Domestic investors have significant participation and to be encouraged said Melaku.

The Ministry of Industry plans to earn 471 million US dollars in revenue from the manufacturing this financial year.
