Roads Authority Realizes 97.7% of Projects in Ethiopian Capital

The City Roads Authority, in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, announced achieving 97.7% of its projects in the first two quarters of the financial year. The authority put in to use 92.7% of the budget allocated to it.

The AACRA mobilized 552 million birr for the projects which include the construction of new roads and the design survey for new and existing roads according to officials. The authority deployed 270 million birr for contractors for the construction and design projects which are 85% and 70% accomplished said the officials.

Lower rates of achievement were recorded with projects such as the construction and maintenance of sidewalks (27%) and the construction of concrete roads (59%).

The work that remains to be done is primarily finishing and will be achieved with the 40 million birr that is left of the budget for this half year according to Engineer Fekade Haile, General Manager of AACRA.

The Authority will arrange an internal budget transfer should the leftover funds from the last two quarters prove inadequate to finalize the projects he said.

The authority has a budget of 1.3 billion birr for the current financial year following price adjustments required by inflationary pressures explained Fekade.

Challenges that have contributed to the delay of some AACRA projects include financial limitations and mangament capacity as well as issues related to right of way he noted.

There are currently ten domestic and one international consultancy firms in charge of AACRA projects as well as several national contractors.
