Chinese Contractors Sign for Road Projects in Ethiopia

China Contractors, China Railway Number Three Engineering Group and CGC Overseas Construction have signed a 1.9 billion birr agreement to construct to roads in Ethiopia.

China Railway Number Three Engineering Group will build the 101 kilometer Abadi-Hawzen-Freweyni highway to connect western and eastern Tigray. The construction project to be completed at government expense is expected to be completed in three years according to a statement released by the Ethiopian Roads Authority.

The consulting work for this project will be handled by the Net Consulting Engineers and Architects said the statement.

CGC Overseas Construction signed the contract to upgrade the 96 kilometer asphalt highway of the Nekempt-Bedele in Oromia Regional State at a cost of 1.065 billion birr. The project is expected to end in three years as per the agreement set in the contract.

Beza Consulting Engineers-Ethiopia and Beza Consulting Engineers-Kenya will collaborate in overseeing the project. The project will be financed by contributions from the Ethiopian government, the Arab Bank for Africa Development, OPEC Fund and the Kuwait Fund.

The road upgrade works will contribute significantly to the transport of agricultural products in an area that is a notable producer of coffee and tea according to Zaid Welde Gabriel Head of the Ethiopian Roads Authority.

It is also expected that the infrastructure work will support the sugar development project at Dedesa.
