Ethiopian Airport Expansion to Complete Ahead of Schedule

The expansion project for the Addis Ababa Airport (Bole) is expected to complete in December, a month ahead of schedule.

The Chinese construction company (CRBC) is expediting the work for an early completion according to Shiferaw Alemu, Director General of the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise. Construction was delayed by the rainy season and by shortages in cement he said.

 31% of the budget assigned to the expansion has been utilized and it is expected that the other 69% will come into use over the coming months explained Ato Shiferaw. CRBC, is undertaking the construction at a cost of 66 million dollars. The cost for expansion project will be covered by the Airports Enterprise.

The expansion project will make it possible for large aircraft, such as the Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 airplanes to park at Bole International Airport.  The current aircraft parking capacity of the Airport is a total of 19 aircraft. It is expected that the expansion will increase this capacity to 44 aircraft.

The expansion project will also include restoration of the runway and the construction of aprons and a taxiway as well as other things.

The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise will inaugurate expansion projects for Jijiga airport and new headquarters near the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa soon.
