Ethiopian Railways Corp. to Complete 42% of Light Rail Transit Project

Ethiopian Railways Corporation plans to complete an estimated 42% of the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit Project during this financial year.

The Corporation launched implementing the project last year after finding financing for the project from the Export-Import bank of China.

The Corporation plans to complete 42% of the project consisting of major civil works such as clearing and leveling the route according to Abebe Mihretu Head of Communication Services.

The construction of the Light Railway Transit has been contracted to the China Railway Group. The contractors have received 15% of the project cost, approximately 75 million US dollars, in advance said Abebe.

Mobilizing which will is about 10% of the project has been finalized he said. The project will be completed on schedule provided that things go as anticipated added Abebe.

There are no major changes anticipated for the  conceptual designs in spite of rumors that changes have been made to the design said Abebe.

Any change in the design will not make a change in route in any case with only minor changes made to which point the track should go at grade, underground or over a bridge he explained.

The Light Railway tracks will be laid on medians in an area which could be as wide as 13 meters but which does not require the demolishing of any buildings he added.
