Ethiopian Expressway 33.6% Complete

The Addis Ababa-Adama Expressway, the first expressway in Ethiopia, is well underway according to the Ethiopian Roads Authority.

More than 33.6% of the construction of the 80 km expressway has so far been completed said Samson Wondimu, Communication Director with the ERA.

The construction of the new road has offered employment opportunities and enabled the introduction of innovative technology to road development in Ethiopia according to Samson.

It is expected that the expressway will contribute to road connections between Addis Ababa and Djibouti as well as between the capital and regional locations such as Hawassa and Bale said Samson.

It is also hope thatd the new road will reduce traffic accidents and reduce fuel consumption on that route he added.

It is to be remembered that the 80 km super high way between Addis Ababa and Adama begins from the ring road just outside of Addis Ababa. The road will parallel the current road linking Adama with the capital and will have exits at every town between Addis Ababa and Adama.

The two way road will be fenced on either side to prevent pedestrians and animals entering the road.

The expressway is presently under construction by CCCC, China Communications Construction Co at an estimated cost of 612 million US dollars. The project, financed by the Exim bank and the Ethiopian government began in April of 2010 and is expected to be finalized in the beginning of 2014.
