SELAM CHILDREN’S VILLAGE is a nongovernmental organization established to provide necessities and a family for children who lost their parents due to the drought that occurred in the northern part of Ethiopia and now working on improving the lives of orphans and destitute community children in Ethiopia. Selam Children’s Village has also a technical and vocational center engaged in producing appropriate technologies including industry products through the research and development to agriculture and related activities. The appropriate technologies includes: agro equipments, building machineries, steel works, aluminum and stainless steel works, hydro power end irrigation equipments and transport equipments.

Background

In 1986, Mrs. Tsehay Roschili founded Selam Children’s Village with 23 orphans and 4 workers in order to provide necessities and a family for children who lost their parents due to the drought that occurred in the northern part of Ethiopia. Following their daughter’s path, her parents, David and Marie-Louise Roschili settled in Ethiopia in 1989 and began the ground work for the technical and vocational center. Over the year, Selam continued to grow, through supporting many people and employing hundreds.

Selam Children’s Village

Selam Children village has two village compounds. Each family house has a “house Mother” and “house Aunt” that look after and take care of the children.
The homes are split between the children’s homes for younger children and the youth homes for older children. Additionally, the organization supports children reaching age 18 through the semi-Independent youth program. SCV I have 7 family homes that accommodate about 100 children and 2 youth houses for 42 youths. SCV II has 4 family houses that serve about 75 children and 20 youths in semi independent program.

 Income generating Activities

Income generating Activities are crucial for the organization to become self-sustainable with a view to support and change the lives of the children who are under our own care. Income generating activities range from producing appropriate technologies including industry products through the research and development to agriculture and related activities. The appropriate technologies includes: agro equipments, building machineries, steel works, aluminum and stainless steel works, hydro power end irrigation equipments and transport equipments.
Manufacturing low cost operation equipment through appropriate technology is a way to locally meet the immediate needs of the community. There are five workshops which have an average 400m2 used to produce the products.

The first workshop is stainless steel workshop, in this workshop all stainless steel products is manufactured and the workshop is equipped with TIG (Tungsten inert gas) welding machine.

The second workshop is metal manufacturing workshop. In this workshop different machineries and metal structure products including metal processing plants processed and assembled. And this workshop is equipped with MIG (metal inert gas) welding, Arc welding, cutting machines, CNC and Manual punching machines, Eccentric presses and plasma cutting machine.

The third workshop is machining workshop. This workshop is equipped with different lathe machines with long bed, milling machine and face grinding machines.
The fourth workshop is Cold forming workshop. This work shop is equipped with various heavy duty shearing and forming machine. This work shop supplies other stainless steel, metal and machine workshops metal or stainless steel sheet after processing. The fifth workshop is cement product mill workshop. This workshop is equipped with mixer machines, crusher plant and hydraform block plant.
The sixth one is a wood workshop. The workshop is equipped with various types of machineries such as circular saw, band saw, milling, press machine, lathe, planner, and sander and planning

Generally the income generating division is lead by Selam children village income generating deputy General Manager who is a mechanical Engineer and the engineering and design service has four mechanical Engineers and one draft person for product design. All of the products and processing plants was designed through this section and the team has a well experience to design a mechanical and electrical component.

In these years Selam’s role in transferring of technologies is vital for the country and it was and is a center for technology incubation. Business premises  

Location suitability for the market: Selam is preferably away from residential areas because of sparking and noise of machineries while welding and cutting iron and woods.
Access: The compounds are wide and have enough space for parking, wide area of land for expansion purpose in all aspects (products and services), fire protection (fire extinguisher) which has been checked by internal ISO auditors regularly. There are also shops equipped by quality and standards machineries & equipments related to the types of production and services; sufficient area of land for agriculture that enables us to expand in the long run Warranty and guaranty (maintenance): For machineries built by Selam there is a warranty given from six months to one year depending on the product.

Quality Control: Quality Control Service was established with the objective of contributing quality service in the process of manufacturing quality products from Selam Technical and Vocational College. Quality Control office performs various Quality-controlling activities based on the approved procedures given to the Service.
