St. Mary's, established in 1998, is a private university in Ethiopia and beyond, which strives to meet the growing demand for SMU new buildingtrained manpower. It is one of the leading higher education institutions in Ethiopia that provides quality education in various fields of studies with magnificent Dynamism to meet up the rapidly growing demands of students, the industry and the critical need for entrepreneurship in the country. The Mission of St. Mary’s University is to offer conventional and distance education that is accessible to the larger society through reasonable tuition focusing on quality and standards in teaching, research and outreach services. Today, it offers an extensive range of undergraduate programs, including Tourism and Hospitality Management, Management, Marketing Management, Accounting, Information Technology, Computer Science, Rural Development, Economics and Sociology. It also runs post-graduate programs in six areas of studies: MBA, HRM, Accounting and Finance, Agri-business, Agri-economics, and Rural Development.

In addition to the links it has with a number of national and international universities. SMU is also a member of the Association of African Universities (AAU) an associate member of the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE), an associate member of African Quality Assurance Network (AfriQAN), and that of the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE). Its partnership agreement with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has brought about a significant impact on access to graduate programs at national level.

You can pursue your preferred course of studies either in day time or evening classes. You may also need to delay taking courses in conventional classrooms if you are often on the move for field work or engaged in full-time employment because our distance learning program has a reputation for customer-focused learner services.

  • Entrance Requirements

To be eligible to apply for anyone of the undergraduate degree programs, applicants shouldsecure the pass mark Of the national preparatory program examination or possess a competency certification of Level IV from CoC Agency fulfilling other requirements that go with it. Graduate programs, on the other hand, in addition to having a first degree, require passing the entrance examination administered by the university.

  • Student Services

There are a number of offices that offer services to the student community. Among these, the offices of Student Development and Success, Cooperative Training, Guidance and Counseling, and the Language Resource Center are included. Moreover, the Gender and HIV / AIDS Prevention and Control Office and the First Aid Clinic are sites that cater for students.

  • Student Governance

The Student Union at St. Mary's provides the opportunity for a forum for the student community to exercise their rights and duties. Accordingly, students participate in a number of clubs like HIV / AIDS awareness, charity, debating and sports. Students' involvement in university governance is made possible through their participation in selected committees, which help them develop policies and programs beneficial to themselves and the university community as a whole.

  • ICT Support Services

With a view to creating a resource, which consistently stimulates and motivates students, the University has Broad Band leased internet lines with wireless connectivity in its campuses. The technology provides a window from the classroom into the real world of communication, and, incidentally, promotes learner autonomy by giving students confidence to operate in that world. The ICT Development and Support Unit develop and customize the learning toolkits that students access on the internet.

  • Center for Educational Improvement and Quality Assurance

The center is responsible for ensuring quality education delivery to students through its internal quality audit mechanisms. In addition, it is charged with ascertaining whether the achievable targets set by institutional and departmental action plans are attained. In this respect, it assesses the operation of the institution, including its programs, to determine whether minimum standards are in place. Furthermore, it organizes in-service training for teachers as part of staff development programs. It has also strong links with institutions that have established quality assurance practices.

  • Outreach Services

St. Mary's considers outreach as fundamental to its responsibility as an institution of higher learning. 
This is illustrated by the strong ties it has with businesses and the wider community. The institution has largely supported the disadvantaged sections of the society through scholarship, short-term training and diverse community service schemes.

  • Research and Knowledge Management Office

With its commitment to knowledge exchange and transfer, the RaKMO office is entrusted with organizing seminars, workshops and national conferences. Aiming to be at the forefront of research undertaking in the country, it has been organizing, for years, international annual conference on Private Higher Education Institutions in Ethiopia (now in Africa), an annual Multidisciplinary Seminar and Student Research Forum.

The Office also sponsors graduate students' on competitive basis and conducts annual research review toward giving financial support to staff who produce research works.

As part of its responsibilities of sharing resources, it has uploaded conference proceedings on its website; so that the research findings can be accessible locally and internationally.

  • Testing Center

The Testing Center is a unit of the university entrusted with administering admission tests, exit examinations, and recruitment tests for employers. 

In addition, it administers the internet based Test of English as a Foreign Language (iBT-TOEFL) and provides tuition for ACCA Qualification Papers. It also works to enhance the quality of the University exams.
