The Ethiopian Sugar Corporation announced that a new national sugar policy is being prepared. The new policy will set the direction for import, export and consumption of sugar in the country, the corporation disclosed.

Wayo Roba, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Sugar Corporation Acting, pointed out that Ethiopia needs a sugar policy that promotes its potentials, solves its problems and enhances its export and import ability in the sector.

While reporting on the corporation’s progress to the Budget and Finance Affairs Standing Committee of the parliament, the CEO said the corporation is working towards the finalization of the policy in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.

The Ethiopian Sugar Corporation is one of those industries that will be open for privatization following the government’s recent announcement of a move towards more rigorous privatization. The sugar policy is one of the “preparations” being made in the privatization process.
