Ethiopia Moves to Install 4 Solar PV Projects

solar-panelEthiopia has opened a tender for four solar PV (photo-volataic) projects, the government announces.

These four are in addition to two scaling up solar projects that currently underway, being carried out according to the IFC’s Scaling Solar Program. The solar projects to be developed will be a public private partnership (PPP), it was further disclosed.

Later in the year, the Ethiopian government plans to initiate and release two more separate solar PV projects. It is expected these two more projects will also be released to prequalified developers before the end of this February.

The request for proposals of the four projects are scheduled to be released in late April or early May this year, while the term of the power purchase agreements (PPA) is set to twenty years.

Due to challenges exhibited in previous similar projects, such as the 100MW Metahara solar project of 2017, the government now seeks to take a more active role in the procurement process. By doing so, the government hopes to effectively streamline the implementation of the projects.
