CGGC Wins Pre-Commissioning Contract for Ethiopia’s Dam on the Nile

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPC) signed a contract agreement with China Gezhouba Group Co. (CGGC) for pre-commissioning activities of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The contract cover activities that cost $40.1 million.

Abraham Belay (PhD), EEPC’s CEO, speaking on the occasion of the contract signing in Addis Ababa, said this contract agreement will have “a significant contribution to pick up the pace of the dam.” He further indicated that he expects CGGC, in partnership with other companies, to work “aggressively” towards the project’s completion according to the schedule.

Upon signing the contract on CGGC’s part, the company’s representative Mr. Wang promised his company, in cooperation with other involved companies, will work diligently to bring the project to completion on time, without compromising the required quality.

It has also been noted that EEPC awarded a balance plant of contract to Voith Hydro Shanghai. This contract covers works including electrical, mechanical, and various civil/structural components required to complete the construction of the generating station and spillways of GERD. This contract is valued at $113 million.

The GERD, Ethiopia’s hydroelectric dam on the Nile, is poised to be the largest project of its kind on the African continent.
