Telecom Giants Eye Ethiopian Market as Ethio Telecom Moves Towards Privatization

Telecom operators operating all over Africa, such as MTN, Orange and Vodacom are now eager to enter the Ethiopian telecom market, TMT Finance reports.

Ethiopia, so far having only the state-owned Ethio Telecom as its sole telecom service provider, is now in the process of privatizing the company. Ethiopia’s over a hundred million population holds a promising largely untapped potential for the telecom industry.

As Africa moves forward towards integration, telecom, media and tech investment are identified as consolidating factors expected to peak in 2019. The opening up of Ethiopia’s telecom industry is considered as one of the significant deals that realize the phenomenon.

Last month, Ethio Telecom took a significant step towards its much anticipated privatization by pre-selecting six consultancy providers in partnership with the World Bank. As the privatization takes effect, Ethio Telecom will be split into two, which in turn will create a huge potential for new entrants.

It is to be recalled that Ethio Telecom announced earlier this month an earning of over 16 billion birr in half a year.
