Ethiopia: New Irrigation Dam To Be Inaugurated

The Gidabo Irrigation Dam project will be inaugurated in a week’s time, the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy disclosed.

The project, which cost over 1.1 billion birr, has a reservoir with a capacity of holding 62.5 million cubic meters of water.

Located conveniently between the Oromia and SNNP regions, some 376 kilometers from Addis Ababa and 17 kilometers from the town of Dilla, the dam can irrigate 13,425 hectares of land, the ministry added. This will be of benefit to over 10,000 farmers and over 192,000 youth seeking employment. Moreover, the dam is expected to attract agricultural investment in the area.

The dam is 25.8 meters high and 335 meters long. Its construction was carried out by the Construction Works Corporation, while Construction Works Design and Supervision Corporation consulted on the work.

While the construction of the dam, which started in February 2002, took longer than originally planned, due to changes in its design, it now poses complete, expected to create over a thousand permanent and temporary jobs.
